A sub-adult Black Rat Snake (they get darker as they age).
One of my 4th of July activities today was to take a break from a housewarming party to liberate a snake from a friend’s birdhouse (and the point of a shovel). The snake had crawled inside and shed its skin, which was hanging out the hole (hence the reason it was discovered). When we took the box down there was a dead bluebird inside, but it appeared to have died from natural causes (i.e., it was long dead). A few people back at the party thought I was weird for what I did, but the kids thought it was cool. I am glad that they are growing up with an appreciation and respect for all creatures great and small, rather than fear fueled by ignorance and (in extreme cases) irrationality.

What a great snake. I wish we hadn’t missed the open house so I could’ve seen it.
I’m not sure I would have had the courage to grab a snake with designs on it’s back but good job… 7 man points for you.
