Last Night was Better

All week Ethan has been waking up every hour at night. Yesterday I was a complete zombie at work. I even went to my car at one point to grab a quick nap (hey, it beats being fired for falling asleep at your desk). However, after last night I think I can make it through the day without having to take such drastic measures.

From nine o’clock in the evening until morning, Ethan only woke up four times. The first three were for feedings and I did not even go to bed until after the first occurance. We both feel much more rested today. Hopefully, we are getting into the same routine that worked with Aidan and Isabel.

  • Pamela feeds baby and goes to bed around 9:00
  • I stay up with baby for about three hours
  • Pamela feeds baby when hungry (approx. every three hours)
  • I get up if baby wakes between feedings
  • If/when formula is introduced, then we alternate feedings

Eventually, Ethan will be able to skip some of the feedings and will be sleeping through the night. For our other two kids this usually happened around the time they were two to three months old. Part of it is the structured routine (i.e., On Becoming Baby Wise); part of it is the kid reaching a certain weight that allows him endure the nocturnal fast. I look forward to that day, even if it so strange and foreign that I wake up worried. What? It’s morning? He slept all night!?! What’s wrong? It’s not supposed to be like this, or is it?

you’re bringing back some vividly foggy memories for me, but soon enough your little guy will be snoozing long and hard and you’ll emerge from the haze. if you happen to have need of a baby swing, we’ve got one available (Alice slept lots of naps in it for a while). and way to help with the feedings. I know it’s not unusual in our circles, but in the grand scheme you’re exceptionally helpful. enjoy those precious early days!

Thanks Bob! We have a swing and have used it a few times already. I’m all about helping feed, change diapers, etc…though I wish I could say that I always did it cheerfully! Last night around 4:30 AM I got a little grumpy about getting up. :D
