Midweek Mix #3

Yesterday Aidan and I took Monty to a new home. I found a contact via the Tri-State Herpetological Society. The guy actually lives right in Flintstone, GA and has a large steel storage shed in his back yard that houses his reptiles. It is fully finished inside and climate controlled. If you are ever in the market for morphs of red-tailed boas, bull snakes, bearded dragons or tortoises; then let me know and I will put you in touch with him. He has a business card, but does not have a website.

I have not ridden my bike to work in a week now, but I think I am finally over the hump with my summer cold. I still have a slight cough, but the chest congestion is lessening. I also feel a lot better, except late in the evening when I should already be in bed. Speaking of bed, Pamela is getting to that point in her pregnancy in which sleep is becoming uncomfortable. I am also starting to wake her up when I come to bed, play games on my PDA and try to read with a book light. I should really learn to give that up.

This coming Saturday is Aidan’s first soccer game. We signed him up for the Lookout Mt. league last weekend. Not only was the cost about half of the Chattanooga Valley league’s fees, but the schedule and expectations are far more reasonable. The mountain league, recognizing that they are working with young kids, has a clinic on Saturday mornings with a game immediately following. In contrast, our neighborhood association has practices every day. One of the baseball coaches told a friend of ours, “You can’t win if you don’t practice.” I am sorry, but I do not think that winning should be the priority for a five year old. Learning the game, developing skills, getting comfortable with using your body for sport and having a fun and positive experience are what matters.

Glad to hear Monty has a happy home. I’m definitely going to have to check out his beardies. Sam says he wants one for Christmas, and I’d like to look at some color morphs.

We did one season of teeball with the CV Rec league and were very frustrated/disappointed. In addition to the fact tht we have decided rec ball just will not fit into our lifestyle right now, this league was very different than the Lookout Valley League we had played with the year before. We were overwhelmed by the schedule (we traveled as far as Rock Springs, LaFayette, etc for games), as well as the attitude. Tee ball should not be about winning or “making great players”; it should be about having fun, learning the game, learning how to be a part of a team, learning to follow directions, etc. It should not be the focus of our lives. That attitude didn’t seem to go over well with the CVRec crowd.

Willa: Yeah, I just can’t see our lives revolving around youth sports. It makes me wonder if parents like that are just living vicariously through their kids or what? Sure, I want to encourage them in activities, but unless my kid is extremely gifted or something I just don’t see us making that kind of sacrifice.

BTW, Aidan and Isabel said this morning that they missed Monty. So sad that they’re deprived of the privilege of growing up with a giant snake. :(

Aunt Mary: Please don’t rub it in. Only the Pirates, Cubs and Nationals are doing worse than the Braves in the NL. :|
