Bicycle Commuting Workshop

The Chattanooga Times-Free Press had an piece in the Local section this morning about an upcoming bike commuting workshop. The article also highlighted the environmental benefits of bike commuting and certain measures that the city is taking to make riding on Chattanooga’s streets more safe. Although it seems geared toward beginners, I am thinking about going to the meeting — if only for the advocacy and networking benefit.

Below are the details on Wednesday’s workshop.

OK, so I’d like to start riding a bike- potentially even to work on the odd occassion I can coordinate that effort, but alas, I don’t have a bike anymore. Any suggestiions of a good beginner road bike? I’ve always had mountain bikes, but not really practical around here!

That sounds great. I have both a road bike and mountain bike…and have used both for commuting. I think that the ideal commuter bike is a flat bar road bike (sort of like a hybrid), but almost anything will do if you make some adjustments (e.g., putting city slicks on a mountain bike).

I’ve been mulling it over for a while and will put together a post tonight that lists some specific bikes for various commuting applications.
