I picked up a dozen pinkies at PETCO today. I noticed that the clerk did not reseal the ziplock container they store them in (which allows for freezer burn). In the near future I will probably go in with the other elaphe owners I know in the area and order feeders in bulk from a more reputable supplier. “Pinkies” are newborn mice. The snakes were eating larger frozen/thawed “fuzzies” (juveniles) before I got them, but the breeder recommended that I scale back for the first several weeks until they get settled into their new homes. For those of you who think you could own a snake, but feel sorry for the cute little mice, did you know that there is such a thing as snake sausages?
Aidan helped me defrost the mice using a plastic bag and hot water. I put the food in the same deli cups that the snakes were shipped in and Aidan placed them in the cages. The kids were too rambunctious to wait and watch, so we shut off the lights and left them alone for a while. I just checked on them after about a half hour and both girls appear to have eaten their food. Hopefully they will not regurg and I can feed them again in several days. Next time I would also like to try and get a photo of them feeding.

Sick.
Ruby finally took the fuzzie. I had already suspected was that she was about to shed, but didn’t realize this would affect her appetite. The day after she shed she took right to the fuzzie, though it was a bit for her to manage.
I’ll likely scale back to the pinkie on the next feeding unless I don’t
BTW, can’t see feeding a snake a vienna sausage - wierd…
