At the risk of jinxing my favorite college football team, I am glad to see them off to their best start since 1999. Today the Penn State Nittany Lions (Pam and the in-laws call them Ninny Lions) improved to 4-0 with a come from behind win over Northwestern. I hope this settles the talk about Joe Paterno needing to retire. Oh, and as for Iowa (the in-laws’ team), they were pummeled this week by Ohio State. Of course, I cannot gloat too much as it will be our turn next week.

Um, no. I don’t think it settles any talk about JoePa. A close win against a bad to mediocre Northwestern team is hardly much to write home about, despite the comeback on the road. Remember when Penn State used to be GOOD??? I predict at best a 2-5 finish to the season.
In hindsight I should have said, “Hopefully, it takes some of the pressure off of Joe Paterno…” What the critics seem to forget is that college football is not all about winning games. JoePa’s definition of GOOD is not the same as the armchair quarterback crowd.
Count me among the critics. I do wonder about JoePa’s definition of good if it differs from mine. Mine means contending for a national championship, as Penn State used to do consistently. If they are not at least competing for a conference or NCAA championship, and Paterno is ok with this, it’s time for him to call it a career.
How bout them Dawgs. Debbie is a big North Western fan being from Chicago.
